The holidays are one of my favorite times of the year, and not just because of the quality time I get to spend with my friends and family, but also the food we share together. When I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner anymore, but I’ve learned that if I keep a few things in mind, my meals are as exciting and flavorful as ever! Take a look at my tips that will help keep you on track for a healthy Thanksgiving dinner:

1. Shopping – Buy fresh ingredients instead of frozen or canned goods whenever possible.

2. Cooking – Use herbs, like garlic, ginger or oregano, to add a boost of flavor.

3. Eating – At the dinner table, have a medium size plate that contains all the food you plan to eat, but is also balanced with healthy options like vegetables and not overloaded with stuffing and other foods that are high in carbs and fat. Once you start eating, it’s important to stay away from seconds. Following this system will help keep your meal and calories reasonable even during the most tempting family feast.

4. Hosting – When it is your turn to host a party, make sure to have many healthy options, in particular fresh vegetables, so there is less room on the plate for dishes high in sugar or fat such as stuffing and mashed potatoes with gravy.

5. Sleeping – It is easy to lose track of time when with family and loved ones. Be sure to get a full night’s sleep so each new day you can start fresh.
