It’s Your Easter: Dye Your Eggs… And Eat Them Too!

Posted by Rachel on April 12th, 2011 at 09:50am

I’ve never been a huge fan of dyeing Easter eggs.  I think I was traumatized early on when I tried to make my eggs look just like the pretty ones on the package, but try as I might, they just ended up a mess.  Now that I’m older, I can’t say I’ve gotten any better at dyeing Easter eggs, so instead of pulling out the food coloring, I’ve embraced a new holiday tradition: cooking egg-centric recipes.

When I started this tradition a few years ago, I didn’t realize how many egg dish recipes there are out there.  I guess I had never really thought about eggs as the star of a dish, but now that I’ve started embracing the egg every Easter, I’m on a constant quest to find new and unusual recipes for eggs.  Recently I found some great ones in RecipeLion’s new free eCookbook, “Easter Eggs: Easter Egg Designs, Tips for Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs and Egg Recipes.”  The book offers five unique recipes to use up your leftover Easter eggs, plus tips on how to make the perfect hard boiled eggs.

My personal favorite recipe is the one for Polish Easter Egg Soup.  I’d heard of this recipe before, but never quite knew what it involved.  Basically it’s a soup made out of a lot of meat (bacon, Polish sausage and ham), and of course eggs.  The directions are really simple and it’s a tasty dish to serve as an appetizer or side dish at your next dinner party.

Of course, the eCookbook also includes more traditional Easter recipes like Classic Deviled Eggs (one of my personal favorites) and Easter Egg Bread (a delicious treat that also shows off your beautifully dyed eggs — well yours, not mine… like I said, I’m no Van Gogh when it comes to decorating Easter Eggs!).  There are even instructions for how to make an Edible Easter Basket in this eCookbook.  Whatever you’re in the mood to make this Easter, you’ll find a great recipe in this collection.

The other thing I love about this eCookbook is that it’s not just about the food.  If you’re a crafter as well as a cooker, make sure to check out the tips and tricks for Easter egg dyeing, like the instructions on how to drain the yolk from an egg for hollow Easter eggs.  Also, have you ever considered dyeing your eggs with fruits and veggies instead of processed food coloring?  It actually seems pretty easy, and the results are gorgeous!  Even though I’m scarred by my previous Easter egg dyeing experiences, I might just have to try out the Natural Dye Easter Egg Tutorial.  Maybe I’ll be able to redeem myself this time?

There are so many ideas in this eCookbook, it’s hard to choose which ones I want to try first!

I’m curious, which of the egg recipes in the Easter Egg eCookbook are you going to try this year?
