New Years Day Black Eyed Peas

You’re probably thinking what do black eyed peas have to do with ringing in the new year? Well, here at Recipe Lion we did some research on New Year’s Day foods and discovered the tradition of eating black eyed peas in a dish called Hoppin’ Johns. They are eaten either just after midnight or on New Year’s Day, and in some cases one pea a day in the new year. Try our fantastic Southern Style Black Eyed Peas or our Country Style Peas for a similar version of a Hoppin’ Johns. This southern tradition is said to bring good luck and prosperity, rooting back to the Civil War.
The traditional black eyed peas dish enjoyed in the south is typically served with rice and pork with southern seasonings. The sides usually include corn bread to represent gold and higher fortune, and greens of some sort to represent paper money. Some people even put a dime or a penny in the black eyed peas. When served, the person who get’s the penny receives the best luck for the new year and hopefully does not swallow the coin. That would be bad.

Zesty Black Eyed Peas
Ingredients
- 1 pound bag of black eyed peas, soaked overnight and drained
- 7 ounces turkey kielbasa, diced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 stalks celery, chopped
- 1 small green pepper, chopped
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 chicken boullion cubes
- 1 can diced tomatoes
- hot sauce to taste
- 3 water (more, if needed)
